Apple Body Shape

Apple body shape

How does apple shaped body look like?

An apple-shaped figure is heavier on the bust, tummy and upper back area, and has broad shoulders. Women with such a figure also tend to have slim and well-toned arms and legs. Although their upper body is a little heavier, their lean arms and legs complement each other well to make them look proportionate and beautiful.

Do you have an apple body shape?

Before you begin to think about dressing for your body type, you should confirm that you do indeed have an apple shaped body. Some people mistake a pear-shaped body for an apple-shaped body. An apple shaped-body is heavy in the middle and above the waist, while a pear-shaped body is heavier below the waist and in the upper thighs. Here are some other characteristics of the apple-shaped body:

  • · A wide torso
  • · Broad shoulders
  • · An average-to-fuller bust
  • · An undefined waist
  • · Thinner arms and legs
  • · A flat bottom
  • · Hips that are narrower than your bust
  • · You don't have to have a very large belly to be apple shaped -- it just means that your center of gravity, or your extra weight, resides in your belly area.

What you should wear?

Traditional

Wear suits that are loose on the waist and avoid fabrics that stick to your body. Fabrics like silk and cotton are made just for you. Long and flared kurtas with V- or U-shaped necklines suit your body well, as they help to hide your broad shoulders. And, whenever you wish to wear a fitted kurti, make sure you balance it with a pair of loose lowers like Patiala salwar or Jodhpuri pants. Also, avoid the suits that have heavy embroidery on the top as it will add further volume to your already heavy top.

Style Tip: Well-fitted bottoms like churidars or leggings are just not made for you, as they will accentuate the imbalance between your upper and lower body. So, whenever you wear them, better cover them with long kurtas.

Casual

Tops for the apple shape

  • First of all, since a lot of attention is going to be drawn to the top part of your body, get yourself a well-fitting bra. You don’t want your bust and your tummy meeting each other.
  • Tops that highlight your body at the slimmest point which is often just underneath your bust. They should have enough space for your belly but not be too wide.
  • Buy t-shirts that are ruched in the middle. This will confuse the eye and you can’t tell that there’s a big tummy underneath.
  • Get Tops with a V-neck to break up the size of your chest and create a vertical line.
  • Look for tops with a thicker texture that don’t cling so much. Woven tops can be great.
  • The best height for tops is just below your hipbone (when worn with pants)
As you are likely to have a larger bust size, look at this article on the best bras for large breasts bras which are supportive AND stylish.
  • Patterns tend to look very good on an apple shape body as they flatter and camouflage.
  • Tops should cover the whole belly area and end just below the hip bone.
  • Tops that draw attention to your arms with e.g. flares, a flit or embroidery will draw attention from your belly
  • Asymmetry in your tops helps to create vertical and slimming lines.
